Other information FROM IRELAND TO CANADA He experienced a difficult year while riding in Ireland in 2015, but in January 2016 he was given the opportunity to compete at the Winter Equestrian Festival [WEF] in Florida, United States of America, where he rode horses belonging to Canadian owners Susan and Ariel Grange. In April that year he moved from Northern Ireland to Canada after the Granges asked him to become a resident rider at their Lothlorien Farm in Cheltenham, Ontario. "It's a bit unreal for me, really. I kind of got lucky in so many ways and now I have ended up with a dream job. In Ireland I thought I was flying it, but then suddenly it all changed and I knew it was time to go after one of my good owners passed away and another owner left the sport - which left me with no direction really. Back then I called my close friend Barry O'Connor and asked him for advice. He told me that [Irish equestrian jumper] Conor Swail was looking for someone, so I went and worked for him. After three months, the owner of Lothlorien Farm asked if I wanted to work for them. It was a great opportunity and I took it. That's how I got a chance to ride better horses and prove I was able to do it." General highlights He was selected for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with Legacy.
Sport Specific Information
When and where did you begin this sport? He began riding at about age nine.
Why this sport? His family is involved in the sport and he was brought up around horses. "I got more competitive at about age 12 or 13 because I didn't like being beaten every week, so I tried to become better at it. When your friends were all really good, obviously you want to be as well. I suppose there was nothing else I was good at. And after I left school, I had to decide how to make a living so I thought I would give it a go."
Club / Team Lothlorien Farm: Cheltenham, ON, CAN
Name of coach Jeroen Dubbeldam (NED)
Training Regime "The younger horses need to do a lot of jumping, trot poles, canter poles and flatwork. I’m constantly giving them things to do, but with Legacy and the older horses, it’s about just keeping them fresh. That might mean going and cantering along the water or on the trail, or doing the hard work on the flat, or maybe 20 minutes of jumping and the flat all in one. It changes every single time, but it’s nice here that you can go out around the canals because otherwise you’re just stuck in one spot all the time and it makes it very monotonous for them."
