In the end I couldn't get up so they called an air ambulance." The pair secured victory together at the 2005 Concours Complet International in Chepstow, Wales. "[When he was born] he was this tiny little thing and could walk right under the mare's tummy. He had a very wonky leg and the vet told us we would be lucky if he made a hack. [Eventually] he was a lovely horse to ride. He always loved his jumping. Again, he didn't make the classical shape over a fence, but he would tuck his little back legs in and was super. Nobody would have bought him from the way he moved, so lucky old me that I was the one who got to have him. He had a heart of gold and tried so hard." (horseandhound.co.uk, 01 Jan 2021; britisheventing.com, 22 May 2005) PANDEMIC JOBS In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked as a delivery driver for a supermarket in the UK to supplement her coaching income. She also studied to become a gym instructor through an online course. "The first thing I will be qualified to teach is circuit training. I started the course fairly soon into lockdown and a lot of it is physiology, so I dredged up my brain power from my degree in applied biology." (horseandhound.co.uk, 12 May 2020) FURTHER EDUCATION She has a postgraduate diploma in applied equine science from the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, England. (Facebook profile, 02 Apr 2021; badminton-horse.co.uk, 02 May 2018) OTHER ACTIVITIES She has written articles for the equestrian magazine Horse & Hound. In August 2020, she was part of a group of riders and supporters who cycled 150 miles from Badminton House to Burghley House in England and raised more than 12,000 GBP for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. Sport Specific Information
When and where did you begin this sport? She began riding at an early age as her mother had an equestrian yard. She tried most equestrian disciplines with the Radnor and West Hereford Pony Club in England.
Why this sport? "I grew up around horses with my mother having a small point-to-point yard and horses and ponies to break in, and buy and sell. It proved to be a good all-round education and I had a go at most things with my ponies and later horses. This included mounted games and gymkhanas, jumping, dressage, eventing, hunting and point-to-pointing. In my late teens, I really got the bug for eventing. It seemed to me that if you were a good enough rider you could produce your own horses to be top eventers, even if they weren't the most expensive or talented."
